Packaging · what to do with it

Recycling, simply

The rules of the house, written like humans wrote them. Ordering, delivery, subscriptions and what happens if something goes wrong.

Sort it in ten seconds

What goes where

Four materials, four answers. Nothing we use needs a special trip.

Glass bottles

Kombucha & tibicos · 33 cl

Plain, uncoloured glass with a metal crown cap. Best of all, rinse it and keep it, or bring it back to us: we have them cleaned professionally and refill them (see below).

When a bottle has truly reached the end, pop the cap off and sort the two: glass in the bottle bank, cap with metals.

→ Reuse, return, or glass bank
Glass jars

Kimchi · 250 g

Thick glass with a metal lid. Endlessly reusable, and genuinely one of the most useful objects in a kitchen.

Keep them, or hand them back to us, and only send the glass to the bottle bank once a jar has truly had its day (metal lid with the metals). See below for reuse and return.

→ Reuse, return, or glass bank
Tempeh wrap

Plant-based film · 200 g

Our tempeh comes in compostable, biodegradable, plant-based packaging, with no fossil plastic at all. It was the single biggest change we made to cut waste.

Straight into your compost or green waste. No rinsing needed.

→ Compost / green waste
Kit wrap

Kombucha & tibicos kits

The wrapping the kit components come in is compostable and biodegradable, plant-based despite its blue colour (we know, it throws people).

Straight into your compost or green waste, just like the tempeh wrap.

→ Compost / green waste
Shipping box & filler

Cardboard & paper

Plain kraft cardboard, paper tape (no plastic tape) and paper padding. No wool, no bubble wrap, no polystyrene, ever.

If you ever find a piece of plastic wrapping in there, it reached us as a by-product of something else, and we are simply giving it a second, longer life. We never buy plastic wrapping ourselves.

When we ship tempeh cold through the hot months, everything in the box is paper too, and the ice pads are the most sustainable we could find. They are made from paper with a chemical-free liquid inside, so you can reuse the pad, or empty it into the sink and recycle the paper.

Flatten the box for paper collection; the padding goes with it.

Bring it back · jars & bottles

Give them
a second life

We are not yet a formal deposit scheme, but we would love your empty Ragi jars and bottles back. Rinse them, hand them over, and we have them cleaned professionally in Lausanne and use them again, which beats melting them down. Or keep them, they are far too useful to bin.

Turn a bottle into something useful

Three caps fit our bottles. Ask for a spray trigger, a soap-dispenser pump or a flip lid, and we will pop one in with your next order.

Three things to make in a Ragi bottle

Citrus vinegar
  1. Collect peels of lemon, orange, mandarin and/or grapefruit and put them in a clean jar.

  2. Add cider, white or wine vinegar until the peels are completely submerged.

  3. Close the lid and let it macerate for 1 week.

  4. Strain and store in a Ragi bottle with the flip lid.

Then put it to work around the house: descale the kettle, cut through grease, and shine up glass, taps and surfaces.

4.png
Multipurpose spray
  1. Warm ½ cup water with 1 tsp grated Marseille soap over medium heat, stirring until dissolved.

  2. Off the heat, add ¼ cup citrus vinegar and 10 drops of lemon essential oil.

  3. Store in a Ragi bottle with the spray trigger. Shake before using.

5.png
Dish soap
  1. Warm ½ cup water with 4 tbsp grated Marseille soap over medium heat, stirring until dissolved.

  2. Off the heat, wait 5 minutes to cool, then add 20 drops of lemon essential oil and stir.

  3. Store in a Ragi bottle with the soap pump.

Where to drop them off

To return them rinsed, bring them straight to us in Lutry, drop them at Racines in Lausanne, or leave them at any Kiss the Ground. It is logistically fiddly and, we are sorry, only possible in Romandie for the moment.

Got a better idea?

Tell us, really

Some of our best packaging changes came from customers writing in. If you spot something we could do better, we want to hear it.
